The names of Slawek and Slavko have become the official mascots of the UEFA European Football Championship 2012. The results of voting, which ended on 3 December, were announced at a press conference in Kyiv and Warsaw. Frantisek Lavrinets, the delegate of the UEFA President on Euro-2012 Issues and member of EUFA Executive Committee, Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister for EURO 2012 Borys Kolesnikov, Football Federation of Ukraine President Hryhoriy Surkis, UEFA Operations Director Martin Kallen and the mayors of host cities were all present at the press conference. As Frantisek Lavrinets said during the presentation, the two EURO 2012 mascots will promote the positive, young, friendly nature of the host countries, Ukraine and Poland. «Their names come from the word «слава» (glory) in its Polish and Ukrainian renditions and this, I am convinced, is what the host countries will receive from EURO 2012», the EUFA Executive Committee member said.
Football fans had two week to vote on three different options. Slawek and Slavko scored 56% of all votes by fans, with Siemko and Strimko getting 29% and Klemek and Ladko 15% of the vote.
